The Competition – Squamish Photographers
Fall is a busy time. Like CRAZY busy. If you haven’t booked your session by now and have any hopes of a nice family photo for Christmas cards to send out GET ON IT.
Add this session to the long list of fall family sessions I never got around to blogging.
When Corrie asked me to do her family photos I will admit I was a little surprised.
Me? Really? THE Corrie Lindroos wants ME for her photos?
We met for
coffee ….I lie, there was definitely alcohol involved in our first meeting… okay, every time we get together.
Well, with the exception of this shoot.
Right. EVERY time. Did you know photographers hang out?
It may shock a lot of people, but there are a bunch of us local photographers who are actually friends.
Most people seem to think we’re all in competition against one another. Which to me seems like madness. I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but there are a lot of people in Squamish.
More every day. And there’s a number of genres of photography. For any one of us to be the ONLY photographer? For everyone? That’s ridiculous. Can you imagine if there was ONE hairdresser in town? And they specialize in perms and buzz cuts. Are you out of your mind?!
Besides that, entrepreneurship can be a lonely place. We don’t have co-workers to vent to about our frustrations in business. Talking to our friends and spouses about ‘photography stuff’ generally gets a lot of glazed over looks and absent nods. It feels good to talk to someone in the same industry, someone who ‘gets it’. My ‘competition’ is also my lifeline to sanity. Well, whatever little I have left anyway.
And Corrie? Well, she’s my kind of crazy.
“If you continuously compete with others you become bitter. If you continuously compete with yourself you become BETTER.”
